KEEN Utility offers a few different outsole tread designs on our boots, each designed for specific jobsite conditions. Here’s a brief overview:
Siped Outsole
Siped tread designs rely on a series of thin, razor-cut slits in the outsole material. When the boot flexes (during walking, etc), these slits open slightly, exposing a distinct edge and increasing traction. Our siped outsole designs also include molded-in channels, which help to quickly evacuate water, much like a car or truck tire on a wet road. Siped styles like our San Jose Family are a great choice for those who mostly work on hard, wet surfaces.
Hybrid Outsole
Hybrid tread designs combine the best aspects of both siped and lugged designs. Distinct lugs around the perimeter of the outsole increase traction on softer surfaces, while a tighter center tread design maximizes surfaces contact on harder surfaces. Styles like our Louisville, Braddock, and Mount Vernon feature hybrid tread designs, and are perfect for those performing a combination of indoor and outdoor work.
Lugged Outsole
Designed for the most rugged worksites, lugged outsoles take on mud, dirt, and wet or dry debris with ease. Due to the lug design and the space between the lugs, this tread type effortlessly releases material with every step. Find lugged outsoles on styles like our Independence Family.
