Warm winter boots are like a trusted friend. Once you find that rugged, cozy pair you love, you want them by your side – and on your feet – snow day after snow day.
So the least you can do is take a few steps to make sure they last longer, right? Better for your future winter shenanigans and the planet.
From icy sidewalks to salty roads to slushy puddles, winter boots endure some pretty harsh conditions, so here are some easy tips to give them extra TLC to keep them in tip-top shape.
1. First things first, it’s important to make sure your boots dry completely after you wear them outside. So, when you take your boots off, make sure you leave them out in a warm spot. This will prevent mildew from forming and ensure they’re nice and dry for the next time you wear them.
2. Next, if you need to clean your boots, start with a damp cloth and warm water to wear down any dirt or salty spots. If your boots need a deeper clean, we recommend using a specialized cleaner like one from our friends at Nikwax. Just make sure it’s suitable for your boot material – whether it’s leather, synthetic, or a combo.
3. Depending on your boot’s material, you may want to condition them with a leather conditioner periodically. But remember, leather conditioner should only be used on shiny, smooth, full-grain leather – not nubuck or suede. If you have shoes made of nubuck or a different material, you may want to opt for a PFAS-free waterproofing spray for extra protection. 4. When you’re ready to put your shoes away for the season, make sure they are clean and dry. To help maintain their shape, you may consider getting shoe trees, or you can stuff them with newspaper. This will help them stay upright and avoid creases.
With a little cleaning and proper storage, your winter boots will be ready to take on any adventure you throw their way. Treat them well, and they’ll reward you with warmth, comfort, and countless winter memories.
