Matsuyama Castle is perched on top of Mount Katsuyama in the middle of Matsuyama, the largest city on Shikoku Island, Japan. You can see this historic castle – built in 1603 and one of Japan's twelve "original castles" – from all over the city. I was determined to check it out and thought, "why not run to it?" The first route I tried was straight up with lots of stairs, and it quickly turned into a walk. Then I discovered a dirt/gravel trail that followed the castle moat on the southwest side later in the week and made it a mission to try again.
The moat trail was flat and lined with cherry blossoms. A zen-like oasis right next to a bustling street. The trail continued up the backside of the castle grounds, and while there was still some elevation, it was much more doable. Once at the top, there were more cherry trees, an ancient Japanese castle, and a phenomenal view of the city.
Favorite Part:
Cherry blossoms in bloom.
Toughest Part:
For me, it's always the elevation gain. Always. :)
Personal Takeaway:
Sightseeing and running can go hand-in-hand. If you can walk it, you can run it. And if it turns out to be too difficult to run, just walk.
My Shoes:
I wore my Roam trail running shoes. I like to pack light, and the Roam is designed to handle all terrain. So I could wear them when hiking around during our Japan trail running shoot and for my morning runs.
Other Gear:
Shorts with pockets for my phone, some cash, and my hotel room key (not a key card ... an actual key!).
Pro Tips:
Bring some yen in your pocket. There's soft-serve iyokan orange (the specialty of this region) ice cream at the top.
