Shoe Care Tips: TLC for Wool

Like you, we love that wool is naturally moisture-wicking, durable, temperature-regulating, biodegradable, and renewable.

But the way it’s produced can be hard on the environment. We don’t use a ton of virgin wool in our shoes, but when we do we make sure it comes from Responsible Wool Standard-certified farms that ensure the welfare of sheep, workers, and the environment.

Giving wool shoes a little TLC can help them last longer – better for you and the planet. Because a longer-lasting shoe is a more sustainable shoe. Here’s a guide on how to ensure they stay cozy for many adventures to come:

Brushing Away Debris

Wool is naturally resistant to dirt, but it’s always a good idea to give your shoes a little attention. After wearing your wool shoes, use a soft-bristled brush to gently remove any dirt or lint. This helps maintain their appearance and keeps them looking sharp.

Washing Your Wool Shoes

Most wool shoes are designed to be low maintenance, but occasional washing can keep them fresh:

Check the Care Label: Before washing, always check the care label for specific instructions. Many wool shoes can be spot cleaned, or hand washed.

Hand Washing: If your shoes need a thorough clean, fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a little wool-safe detergent. Gently agitate the water, then submerge your shoes. Swish them around lightly, then rinse with cool water until all soap is gone.

Drying: Never wring out wool shoes! Instead, press out excess water with a towel and reshape them. Let them air dry away from direct sunlight and heat sources to avoid shrinking or damaging the fibers.

 Dealing With Odors

Wool is naturally odor-resistant, but after a long day of wear, your shoes might need a little extra care:

Air Them Out: After wearing your wool shoes, leave them in a well-ventilated area to help dissipate any odors.

• Freshen Them Up: For a deeper clean, sprinkle a little baking soda inside the shoes and let it sit overnight. Shake out the excess in the morning for fresh-smelling footwear. (For more odor control options, check out our care FAQ page here.)

Storing With Care

Keep Them Dry: Store your shoes in a cool, dry place. Avoid damp areas to prevent mildew or unwanted odors.

Use Shoe Trees: If possible, use shoe trees to help maintain their shape or crumpled up newspaper. This can prevent creasing and keep them looking their best.

With regular maintenance, washing when necessary, and proper storage, your wool footwear can continue to be your go-to comfort shoe for cozy adventures.
