Trail Run Log: La Quinta Cove

We're running for the trails in our new KEEN trail runners – and we're sharing our favorite places to go. Check back for more trail run reports from KEENers around the world.

My Run Log

Location: La Quinta Cove to Lake trail, south of Palm Springs
Distance: 3-6 miles
Shoes worn: KEEN Seek trail runners
Hydration: Post-run water bottle
Pre-run nutrition: Oatmeal

The Cove-to-Lake Trail is a relatively flat, 6-mile out and back with beautiful mountains all around. My husband and I got there before sunrise to take advantage of the cooler temps. He ran the full 6 miles, and I turned around at an overlook to make it a 3-mile run for me.

Favorite Part:
I loved how quiet it was. It felt like we were the only ones out there. The light was so pretty as the sun was rising over the mountains. I wanted to stop several times to take photos of the stunning desert flora.

Toughest Part:
There was a pretty steep climb near the halfway point, before the trail dropped down into a valley to head toward the lake. That’s why I turned around there, so I wouldn't have another big climb on the way back!

Personal Takeaway:
I am not a distance runner, but I will keep running to reach something that looks interesting. Exploration is my biggest motivation.

My Shoes:
I ran in a sample pair of Seek trail running shoes (color is a little different from final options). Compared to my road/track running shoes, these felt so springy! And the grip was incredible. I had to navigate a lot of loose dirt and rocks, and the luggy sole really dug in. I loved how they felt so much that I went back and ran this trail again two days later.

Other Gear:
I wore my favorite running shorts. I love that they have a pocket for my phone in the back. I also wore a running hat (always!) and my Goodr sunglasses. I left a water bottle with lots of ice in my car at the trailhead.

Pro Tips:
Get here early before the crowds and the sun. There’s a great smoothie place a short drive away (Fresh Juice Bar in Indio) for post-run refreshments!
