KEEN Canada and CPAWS: Teaming Up to Keep Canada Wild
Banff, Jasper, Waterton Lakes, and Prince Edward Island are a few of Canada’s treasured national parks, and we’re partnering with The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) to help keep these public lands and many others wild.
To celebrate 15 years of the Newport sandal, KEEN Canada made the decision at the beginning of 2018 to donate $1 from the sale of every Newport sold on the KEEN Canada website and in-store to CPAWS.
Canada has a huge opportunity to protect our amazing wilderness. What an exciting time to get involved in leaving a natural legacy for ourselves and for future hikers, climbers, and paddlers.
As Canada’s only nationwide charity dedicated solely to the protection of Canada’s public land and water, CPAWS has played a leading role over the past 50+ years in protecting over half a million square kilometers – an area that is bigger than the entire Yukon Territory. They have a vision to protect at least half of Canada’s public land and water so that future generations can experience the country’s irreplaceable wilderness. We hope that through our Newport give-back campaign that we can help CPAWS reach their inspiring goal.
Working Together to Protect 17% by 2020
On July 17, 2018, CPAWS released its annual Parks Report, What’s Next: Parks and Protected Areas to 2020 and Beyond, which outlines how governments in Canada–federal, provincial, territorial, and Indigenous–can work together to achieve Canada’s international commitment to protect at least 17% of their landscape by 2020, and to plan for the longer-term work needed to reverse the catastrophic and ongoing decline in nature.
"Canada has a huge opportunity to protect our amazing wilderness—and the time to do it is now! People across Canada are realizing that they can make a difference just by speaking up and telling their elected representatives that they care about parks, protected areas, and wildlife," says Alison Ronson, CPAWS' National Director, Parks Program. "What an exciting time to get involved in leaving a natural legacy for ourselves and for future hikers, climbers, and paddlers."
Diverse voices across the entire country are now calling for action on protected areas, and momentum is growing. With 2020 less than two years away, people are starting to ask, “Can Canada do this?” With CPAWS leading the way, and a considerable amount of collaborative work being done, it is looking like the answer is yes! If the proposed areas are protected, Canada would reach 14% protection, and there are still many other proposed places not yet publicly identified.
How you can help
If you’re in Canada, there’s still time to take part in our Newport give-back campaign through the summer. And no matter where you live, you can take action to help by visiting the Keep Canada Wild campaign website and signing the pledge of support.
Over the past several years, KEEN has helped CPAWS reach a number of targets in their mission to protect Canada’s parks and wilderness. For many years, we have participated in their annual fundraiser, Week For The Wild, aimed at increasing awareness for Canada’s at-risk species, including woodland caribou, Atlantic salmon, and the grizzly bear.
