KEEN Effect Grantee in Action: GirlVentures
Growing a generation of healthy, self-confident young women and community leaders is what GirlVentures is all about. Not only does this program provide experiential environmental education opportunities in the Northern California wilderness, they do so for a wide range of diverse adolescent girls. GirlVentures is now reaching their 20th year of service of creating a new generation of environmental stewards and committed civic leaders. With KEENs support, they will continue to empower girls to reach their full potential and enable young women to become active participants and leaders in their schools and communities.
GirlVentures has an impressive track record already. Comparing five-year averages, more than 90% of the 300 girls they serve report that their participation has empowered them to make smart choices for healthy living. Many also said that their able to relate to each other and their environment wisely and have become effective and confident leaders.
What is unique about GirlVentures is that they have two-thirds of their participants come from low-to-middle income families and ensure that these students receive full or partial scholarships. Connecting diverse young women to each other enriches the experience that much more over the course of their 7-14 day adventures. And it doesn’t stop there. In 2002 GirlVentures started a Girls Advisory Board for high school girls who are GirlVentures alumnae, to continue developing their personal leadership goals. They also connect their participants with programs like Outward Bound and the National Outdoor Leadership School to encourage diversification in the field and to support long-term growth. Not too shabby GirlVentures, not too shabby.
