Volunteering in Peru and Leaving Behind Her KEEN Sandals

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Hello:

My name is Carrie.   I am a second grade teacher in Vancouver, Washington.  I spent this summer volunteering in Ayacucho, Peru for a program called Kids at the Crossroads. KATC is a program serving at risk kids ages 4-16.

KEENs in Peru

The founder Virginia Coleman is a former Portlander who wears KEENs all the time in Peru. When I left Ayacucho I also left most of my clothes and my KEENs for the people there.

Thanks for making great shoes.

Your Incredible Shoes: A Fourth Grade Teacher’s Perspective of Newport Sandals and a Pumpkin Contest?

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

Dear KEEN,

I have just purchased my third pair of Newport sandals. Like the previous two, I will wear these all day long, every day of the week, every week of the year. I have never worn shoes as comfortable or as cool looking as these bad boys. I teach fourth grade here in Richmond, Virginia.

For our Fall festival a few months ago, each classroom designed a pumpkin for a school contest. Unbeknownst to me, my room mother modeled the pumpkin after me right down to a pair of KEENs (which belonged to a boy in my class). It didn’t win a prize but we loved it and I told the class that I would e-mail a copy to you.

Thanks for your amazing shoes. I tell everyone I know about these shoes and hope I’ve steered a lot of business your way. I am a customer for life.

All the best,

John Vassar

The Freshwater Trust: A High School Student’s Perspective of Salmon Watch Education Program

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

On Thursday January 28th, The Freshwater Trust (TFT) hosted its annual Salmon Watch Appreciation Event for teachers, volunteers and program partners. This event is a thank you to TFT’s 200+ volunteers and a way to recognize highlights from the Salmon Watch education program which serves over 5,000 students across the state of Oregon every fall.

This year as our “keynote” for the evening, TFT invited 5 exceptional students from New Urban HS, David Douglas HS and Multnomah Youth Cooperative to share about their experience in Salmon Watch and Student Stewardship Projects on a student panel so volunteers could hear first hand, how they have been able to make a positive contribution through this program. Over 75 of our partners, volunteers and teachers attended to socialize, network and hear directly from the students about their connection to the natural world.
