First Official Tour – Portland Walking Tours

Friday, May 27th, 2011

This posting is from Adam, one of Portland Walking Toursour HybridLife Radio show hosts.

When KEEN announced that “Recess is Back” earlier this month, I had to giggle to myself just a little bit. They want
ed Heather and I to share with HybridLife Radio listeners, recess moments that we have during the week. Prior to this announcement, I had been training constantly for my new day job as a tour guide, or “Resident Expert” for Portland Walking Tours. For this job, I’ll be strolling around Portland telling people about the history, culture, and food and drink of the town. I thought to myself “My job is recess!”

I led my first official tour not too long ago and one couple definitely stuck out (in a good way) for a few reasons. For starters, they were walking their collapsible bikes around with them on the tour. And secondly, they were both sporting some heavily used KEEN Newports. Once the tour was over, we had a chance to chat about Portland, KEENs, and also those fancy bikes they took with them on the tour. It turns out they sold everything they own to take an open-ended bike tour across America. They have a pretty fascinating story to tell, and you can check it out at www.pathlesspedaled.com.

I would say that overall, my first tour went as well as I could have hoped. I had a sunny day and met a great bunch of people; some of which are testing the very limits of recess and what it means. It’s going to be good summer.

The Netherlands: Hybridlife Moment Photo Competition

Friday, December 31st, 2010

This competition is only open to residents of the Netherlands. (And yes, you need to read Dutch, too!)

Kortom; Share your HybridLife met ons.

Play

How do we turn our passion into our job, and how do we turn our job into our passion? In the past two months I have been pursuing that goal, while training to be a field instructor at Teton Science Schools in Jackson, WY. I moved here April 4th after enjoying a winter chasing Wasatch powder at Alta. Was I ready to quit skiing? I probably never will be, but fortunately spring in the Tetons frequently means powder days. With Teton Pass just 20 minutes up the road, sunset runs after work have been a frequent occurrence.

Care

Despite all of the skiing the majority of my time in Jackson has been spent in the field sharing the incredible Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem with students visiting Teton Science Schools. Each day we load buses, drive into Grand Teton National Park and spend the whole day walking around the woods; it’s experiential education at its finest. I am able to share my passion for the outdoors and the natural world with enthusiastic grade school kids; it’s one of the most rewarding things in the world.

Create

As spring moves on towards summer I have also been hard at work trying to adapt my passion for gardening into the hostile Jackson climate. I secured a plot at the Jackson Hole Community Garden and with a little help from my friends weeded and planted during a snowstorm. I will be taking field groups to visit it and track its progress throughout the summer.

I’ve learned a lot about passion in the last two months. Jackson is an amazing place to pursue it and an essential part of that pursuit is to pass it on to others. The things we love are nothing without others to share them with.

Playground Tour Hybridlife Interview: Meet Mike Lowman of Lander, Wyoming

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

June 6th marked the day Wend editor-at-large Rick Olson departed from Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado to embark on a four-month, 5,000-mile bicycle tour of the National Park-to-Park highway.

While on the tour, Rick is interviewing people Livin’ the Hybridlife, such as Mike Lowman of Lander, Wyoming.

About the Playground Tour

The Playground Tour, which was named after the “Playground Trail,” a 5,000-mile tour of twelve National Parks west of the Rockies that was taken by a group of Americans in 1920. Their mission was to generate awareness and support for better roads to facilitate easier access to recreational areas.

The Playground Tour is an attempt to recreate this tour by bicycle. The mission is to raise money and awareness for the United States Bike Route System. Rick is teaming up with the Adventure Cycling Association and will be observing and documenting the difficulty of travel and roads conditions for cycling throughout the ride.

We recently created a new video as a way of introducing KEEN, HybridLife and the new Spring/Summer 2010 products to individuals who work at retailer stores where our shoes, bags and socks are sold. The video captures the many faces of KEEN, including our CEO James Curleigh, product developers and several others around the organization.
