Cycling Spokane Reviews KEEN Austin SPD Compatible Shoe
Tuesday, October 25th, 2011As a daily cyclist who appreciates clipless pedals, I’m always on the look out for “normal” looking SPD-compatible shoes. There seems to be no shortage of SPD compatible shoes in the world, but like Lycra, most SPD shoes do not blend well in casual non-bikey company.
The KEEN Austin hides its utility well in a normal looking and comfortable Oxford-style shoe that is fit for daily use on and off the bike. Like most KEEN shoes, the Austin has a distinctively wide toe box and a thick black rubber sole that wraps up over the front of the toe. The Austin’s muted tan color is officially called “Shitake.” Thankfully, there are no garish colors or overtly loud labels to distract from the quiet and unoffending design. In fact, the KEEN Austin may be the only boring looking shoe that is SPD compatible. But boring is a huge win in this category, and in the end, the Austin blends well with a wide range of casual clothing and performs reasonably well on the bike too.

Wend Magazine’s Platform – An Interview with Dan Austin of 88Bikes
Thursday, May 19th, 2011Platform is a section in which Wend Magazine donates space to activists working to make the planet a better place to live.
Dan Austin is executive director and co-founder of 88Bikes, a nonprofit organization that delivers bicycles to children who face challenges due to war, conflict, poverty, disease or other regional hardships. To learn more about 88Bikes, visit 88Bikes.org.
Wend: Tell us about the humble beginnings of 88Bikes.
Austin: My brother, Jared, and I were going to do a ride across Cambodia, and we decided to give our bikes away at the end. Through some contacts at National Geographic, we found a good orphanage in Phnom Penh. We realized a couple (of) weeks before we left, though, that there were 88 kids in the orphanage, meaning 86 kids would be left out. So we threw a fundraiser, launched a website and within four days we had all the donations we needed to give bikes to all 88 kids. It was such a scene of jubilation and pure, unbridled happiness that we knew right then that we needed to do it again.

Donning a Pink Tutu? KEEN Team Hops on Their Bikes for Worst Day of the Year Ride
Friday, February 25th, 2011KEEN participated in Portland’s 10th annual WORST DAY OF THE YEAR ride, Sunday Feb 13th ~ an event heralding riding in all kinds of weather, wearing crazy costumes and having fun. It was just an overall enjoyable cruise with old and young alike, many of which were dressed for show.
The ride was organized by the Community Cycling Center, an organization providing access to bicycling and its benefits through its hands-on programs, volunteer projects, and neighborhood bike shop.
The KEEN team is lined up and ready for the start…

The official KEEN outfit – a pink tutu!

At one point, we were stopped at a stop sign and Marco (one of our teammates) was having issues with his tutu. He was mumbling something to the effect of ‘I need help with my tutu,’ and I think the older man next to him thought he was being asked to assist.
Towards the end of the ride, the KEEN team was coming down Sandy Blvd and noticed that an (unnamed) team member’s bike was randomly resting against a pole on the sidewalk, but there was nobody in sight. We looked up and saw it was sitting outside a bar. Found! Decision made… a pint was split and we continued around the corner where the rest of the Warrior Riders awaited.
Most KEENERS rode the 18 mile city tour, while a couple super riders scaled the ridges above Portland, for a 45 mile leg burner. This was KEEN’s first team ride at this event and we’re sure that we’ll be back!
Mountain Biking Japanese Winter in the Gunma Region of Japan
Monday, December 20th, 2010“Mid-November, I went mountain biking in Gunma to shoot an articles for Bicycle Magazine. At this altitude (1500 ~ 1800m), the view spreads pretty far across the Japanese landscape. For this trip, I wore the KEEN Targhee IIs, which gripped well in the early morning snow. In the photograph, the shoes are rather wet, but downright dry.” – BIKE’N SHOES

A Letter from Sheila: KEEN Commuter Sandals and the HooDoo 500 Ultradistance Bike Race
Sunday, December 5th, 2010Dear KEEN:
I have an update regarding the use of the KEEN Commuter sandals on the HooDoo 500 Ultradistance Bike Race by my husband, Russ Stevens. He returned to the event in 2010, as a Voyager (no support crew or vehicle), and finished the event in just over 40 hours. He did buy a new pair just before the race, as his originals were a getting a bit tattered. Here is a LINK to his ride story.
It was an incredibly tough field out there. Russ broke the current Voyager course record by 2.5 hours, but still only came in third! He definitely fielded lots of questions about his footwear!
Best regards,
Sheila
(also a KEEN fan, but only up to 250 miles at a time so far!)
