KEEN Ambassador Travels to Tanzania to Gives KEEN Boots to Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

Last fall we sent 25 pair of assorted KEEN hiking boots and shoes to the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP).  These were sent over with KEEN Ambassador Christian Santelices and 5 people who climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project

Here’s what Christian had to say:

You and the KEEN team have made a big impact here in Tanzania. I delivered the shoes to the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) here in Moshi, Tanzania, at the base of Kilimanjaro. The shoes will be put into the gear borrowing program that they have set up. Porters can come in and borrow equipment and clothing to be able to do their jobs better on the mountain and help them earn a more sustainable living. KPAP also works with local outfitters to provide better working conditions for porters including making sure they are fed and paid appropriately. I met the staff as well as some of the porters. Really great folks working hard to make the lives of people working on the mountain better.

Check out Playgrounds Re-Imagined Trailer! A Face-Paced Ride to Celebrate The Places We Play

Saturday, January 14th, 2012

“‘Nature is the most beautiful thing… There’s a universal energy. We should protect nature, because we are nature. I imagine the world as a playground.’ Bet you didn’t think those words would come from a 9-year-old, Dylan Brophy, who freestyles the narration for my new award-winning film, Playgrounds Re-imagined. From the beauty and rawness of the opening scenes, to the fun-filled journey that unfolds across the United States (by way of a Japanese firetruck that runs on veggie oil, aka “Baby”), you are along for a fast-paced ride to celebrate the places we play, and the people who dedicate their lives to protecting them.” – Seth Warren, Playgrounds Re-Imagined.

Hang Gliding in Montana with KEEN Ambassador Seth Warren

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

“I’ve spent the last 4 months honing in my skills as a new pilot. Hang Gliding is a pretty tough sport to get into. It took me close to 4 years as a beginner pilot and I feel lucky to have had some extra time this summer to make the jump up into intermediate status,” comments KEEN Ambassador Seth Warren.

Seth goes on to say that he is “excited to report that this summer I’ve made 66 new flights with over 35 hours of airtime. I just wanted to say thanks to KEEN for providing me the footwear that enables me to walk, jog, run and air walk into the sky! I can imagine no better recess then soaring with the birds on my lunch break.”

Surfing the Rockies SUP-Style with KEEN Ambassador Seth Warren

Monday, August 8th, 2011

“I’ve been breaking new ground…..well water in the SUP world.  From surfing to river running, I’ve been out on the board almost every day for the last month.

From the spot in downtown Missoula on my 7’2 King Fish board, to the shoulder high Pipeline wave on the Lochsa River….it is confirmed.  You can surf the rockies these days.  I managed to pull off the first (still the only) descent of the the infamous class IV Lochsa River, staying on the board for nearly all the rapids thanks to the new foot straps I designed to increase the stability.  Another highlight was the Salmon River through Riggens that was running at nearly 80,000 cfs, close to the annual peak.

It’s been a really fun spring/summer and of course each and every river I have done with my awesome KEEN Gorge Booties!  Just wanted to give a shout out to KEEN and say thanks for all the support.

Thanks a ton for the continued support and hope you all are great!”

KEEN Ambassador on the Playground: Tay and Val Take on ‘I Believe That Dreams Can Come True’ Project

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

“I BELIEVE THAT DREAMS CAN COME TRUE” is a community project, taken on by Tay and Val, with the intentions to: Spread the belief that dreams can come true, share stories of people’s personal dreams and inspire dreams.  As film-makers, their dream is to tell stories of love, life and hope; stories that inspire. This dream got lost amongst deadlines, budgets and expectations when we were working as full-time TV Producers/Directors.

“We made a decision to abandon our traditional TV business, sell everything we own and go collect people’s dreams all over the world, on our bicycles. Using our skills in story-telling, we want to document stories of people taking that first step towards their dreams, people en route chasing their dreams, and people already living their dreams,” comment Tay and Val.

Val (Left) Tay (Right) - Tiawan, March 2010

What is your playground of choice? “Our Playground of choice is every possible footprint on Mother Earth.”

What is one thing you can do to preserve your playground? “With Reverence and Gratitude – respect the land we trade on, respect the mountains we climb, respect the seas that we swim in.  With footprint tread on this Earth, we give thanks and say ‘Thank You’ for that one more step taken on this journey.”

Favorite KEEN Shoe: “We wanted a pair of comfortable sandals that could bring us anywhere on this journey.  From better push off support riding on our bicycles up the challenging slopes, to hiking up dirt trails for the next adventure, to jumping from one rock to another on the river, to maneuvering through wet and slippery local markets around the world, etc. And we found them with KEEN’s Newport H2 (Dark Citron for Tay and Living Coral f0r Val). They are our first pairs of KEEN shoes and they have helped us conquer our first mountain hike, here in Guatemala!”
