HybridLife Radio? And The Winners Are…

Friday, September 24th, 2010

KEEN HybridLife RadioThis fall KEEN will be producing an internet based radio show for active families with an organization called pagatim.fm. The program will be called HybridLife Radio (HLR) and will focus on the ways families can incorporate HybridLife into their daily living.

The show will officially launch September 29, 2010 at 1 p.m. PST. Heather Hardy of NW Portland and Adam Sawyer of North Portland will co-host HLR. They will be responsible for putting together 48 half-hour shows over a year on a variety of topics along the HybridLife theme.

Heather is a mother of three, with 2 boys (ages 12 and 7) and a girl (age 7). She works in non-profit development for Morrison Child and Family Services. “I hope to bring fun new ideas to families and encourage others to get their kids out of the house,” said Heather.

Adam has an 8-year old daughter and is a freelance outdoor writer/photographer, program director for Oregon Active Family and a pizza maker. “I hope to talk about raising active kids in Portland and how families can be more active in their communities,” said Adam.

To kick-off the HybridLife Radio Show, our President and CEO went live with “Dads Unplugged Radio – With Special Guest James Curleigh.”  Listen here!!!

We are thrilled to welcome Heather and Adam to the KEEN family as hosts of the new HybridLife Radio show, and as brand ambassadors. We look forward to the inspiration they will bring our brand, and HLR listeners, on ways to integrate creativity, playfulness and caring for community (what we call HybridLife) into active family living.

23 Feet = 1 film, 3 women and 2600 Miles

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

One film, three women, 23 feet of Airstream, and 2600 miles.

23 Feet invites you to come along with them as they search for the connections of a traveling community and explore the beauty of the wild lands of the West. They’ll be filming the most arresting landscapes of the West, places that foster both epic adventure and peaceful escape. They plan to advocate activism and awareness of conservation through promoting organizations that dedicate themselves to preserving these wild lands, and encourage people to get outside and see these places for themselves.

ROMA

Traveling over 2600 miles, three women will encounter new and old friends and discover what its like to leave it all behind. They’ll find that the sacrifice of leaving the comforts of home are worth the journey, and that the feeling of community isn’t always in the same backyard.

Follow the journey…

Letter From Boise River Volunteers President and KEEN Worshiper

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

Boise River Volunteers - Boise Idaho

Dear KEEN,

I just wanted to send a huge THANK YOU for the support you are sending to the Boise River Volunteers! Over the years we have fished thousands of flip flops, expensive tennis shoes, and various leather sandals out of the River but I guarantee you that we have NEVER pulled a KEEN shoe out of the water. Many people may wonder why that is, however, anyone who has ever had the extreme pleasure of owning a pair (or several pairs like some of us) KEEN’s, they will risk life or limb to get their little lost shoe back.

When I attended the Boise RecFest a few weeks back I received a KEEN key chain and I absolutely cherish that little guy! I proudly exclaim to anyone within earshot that KEEN shoes are more than just a summer shoe, they are a winter, spring, and fall shoe as well. The volunteers who do not have the luxury of purchasing a pair without Chris’ help long for a pair like ours and those who do own them tell everyone else that they need to purchase a pair of KEEN’s as they will be the last pair of river shoes they will ever put on their feet.

My humble gratitude extends to you for a lifetime.

Sincerely,

Teresa Fridrich, President
Boise River Volunteers and Fellow KEEN Worshiper

Signs and Wonders
Or: Who Says There’re No Such Things as Miracles?

In The summer of 2009 I was lucky enough to find myself floating the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon with my wife and a few of our friends. Let me put the bottom of the Grand Canyon into one word for those of you unfortunates that haven’t made it down there yet: Awesome. And not the cliché, slang awesome, but the truly awesome, the I-can’t-believe-that-things-this-beautiful-exist kind of awesome. Another word that might be used to describe the bottom of that mightiest of canyons: Brutal. Yet again, brutal in the truest sense of the word. And when I say brutal, I mean brutal on everything: clothes, skin, hair, mind, spirits, friendships, footwear, everything. We were a small party all crammed onto three boats with no room to spare. With this in mind, I decided to take only one pair of footwear. Quite a few of us river folk believe in and trust one certain brand of sandaled footwear. I won’t mention this brand’s name because I’m a nice guy, but I will say this: they make sandals with one strap that goes in and out of the sole, which itself is held together with what one can only assume is crafts glue, and they share the name of a certain National Historic Park in beautiful New Mexico. Figured it out? Great, let’s move on.

All may faith lay in these most trusted of sandals, which proved to be misguided, as the sandals, for lack of a better vocabulary, ate it. Within the first week on the river the sandals had become an amalgamation of tape, sand, unspeakable curses, and the things that hopelessness is made of. In short, it was a tragedy. All that beautiful hiking, exploring, possibility, adventure and bliss was disintegrating before my eyes.

“Why me?” I asked, arms raised to the heavens, “What have I done to deserve this unspeakable injustice?”
I listened but heard no answer….until:

Landing on a beach several days after I had resigned my sandals to the sad fate of absolute worthlessness, I was pardoned from the tortuous foot hell I had found myself immersed in by a savior named KEEN. If you think I’m embellishing a bit too much just imagine your foot strapped into a rusty cheese grater and we might be back on the same page. Walking barefoot down the beach, giving my feet a much-needed break, I stumbled, literally, over the toe of a sandal sticking out of the sand. I dug the sandal up and found a solo near-to-new KEEN Newport H2. At this exact moment one of our party decided to take a bath in the river and stepped on the H2’s mate. A grabbed the sandals and whispered a soft prayer that went like this: “Please be nine and a halves, please be nine and a halves, please be nine and a halves….”.

I slid the sandals on and like some strange and bearded version Cinderella it was a perfect fit. I’ve worn the sandals on every river trip since because if that isn’t a sign, then what is?
