Don Miller, the Executive Director of Severson Dells Nature Center in Rockford, Illinois, has always inspired me. He has worked tirelessly for more than 20 years at the nature center to help area school children learn about the environment. He works with an extremely conservative budget, a staff of only 4, and a next-to-nothing salary to provide quality interactions in nature for thousands of children each year. Most of these children are from inner city and urban areas and attend economically-depressed school districts that can’t often afford field trips. Don works with these schools to make sure every child has the opportunity to experience the outdoors at Severson Dells. Often these children have never seen a whitetailed deer (a very common Northern Illinois species), put their hand in a pond, or listened to a forest of trees rustle in the wind. Don makes sure that kids get to play, use their imagination, and get a little dirty on each and every trip to the Dells. He makes very little doing what he does and has been offered countless other, more high-ranking and high-paying positions, and turns them down everytime. I am truly inspired by his selflessness and his sacrifice to help ensure that we all have a new generation of nature lovers and conservationists.
Hey, the person that inspires me to get out and “do” is my younger brother. He is so active and his energy is contagious. He inspires me to be a better person. Twitter name: JBartRedHawk

My mother inspires me daily. Her can do attitude and love of life not only makes me smile, but makes me want to live each day to the fullest and not look back! Thanks MOM!I LOVE YOU!
The late Alex Lowe inspires me. The backcountry-skiing dawn patrols, his mania for coffee and pullups, his energy and lust for life all push me to do more, expect more, take more on. Even though I only know of him through written accounts, I have had many excellent adventures thanks to his example.
My husband, who is also my best friend, is who inspires me daily. I grew up playing a few sports, but would never have considered myself athletic or a great outdoors expert. With my husband’s encouragement I have learned all about camping, rock climbing, skiing and even participated in Cycle Oregon. Whether he is cycling in a group or just enjoying a leisure afternoon with our son in the ski trailer, he is so excited to be outdoors and sharing his passions with others. He is never too busy to help those just getting into a sport or new hobby. He exudes enthusiasm and is blessed with patience. I am lucky to have him enriching our lives.
Hey, you know, Keenes are the great Undiscovered Secret of the West. Us Portlanders happen to know that Keenes will get wet AND BE DRY THE NEXT DAY.
Love ya!
Love ya, you have the Portland market *nailed*. I can’t tell you the number of times I awoke on a Cycle Oregon, where my friends had *wet* Italian shoes and I was *warm and dry* in my Keenes. Still wearing them, even here on the Wasatch Front…..
My friend Craig is my inspiration.
He’s a cancer survivor. While his wife was pregnant with their first baby, he was diagnosed with tonsil cancer. He underwent chemo and radiation during the final trimester. As soon as he was off those treatments, he started running again. While he’d been a cross country runner in college, like many of us he’d quit as he got older, started a career and got married. Just a couple of months after being in chemo, he ran a 5K for the first time in more than a decade. He finished middle of the pack in his age group, but he finished.
Like Craig, I’d quit doing things I’d done when I was younger. And we had our first baby two months after they did. So I got back on my mountain bike, because if he can run I can damn sure bike. After a couple of months, I entered a local race. I finished in the middle of my age group, but I finished.
But I’m not finished. I’m just getting started. I’ve lost 20 pounds by getting back on the bike. My goal is another 20 … and to podium in the same race next fall. And that’s because of Craig, who inspired me. Because if he can find time to run after beating cancer while being a new daddy, then I can find time to bike while just being a new dad myself.
My cousin Debbie is my inspiration. As opposed to going to the gym, she gets outside everyday to get some exercise no matter what the weather is like.

My wife inspires me every day!

I am inspired by my husband — his steady, positive attitude and reliable kindness make him a favorite among his friends, family, and a bright spot in any stranger’s day. He is wonderful to two- and four-legged friends, works hard, creates beauty, and inspires me to be better, try harder, and giggle more.
My husband inspires me daily. No matter how bad he feels, he’s up and out of here to work 6 days a week. And when I am bouncing off the walls, he is calm and grounded. He always has time for our 3 daughters and grandaughter. For such a macho guy, he sure treats our kitty like a baby.

My 11 year old daughter inspires me continually, shes always ready for a backpacking trip or a mountai bike ride even when im tired from work she seems to get me fired up for a hike or a ride into the great outdoors around here. I am a single father of 2 girls we all have a special bond for sure but the baby always has a knack to brighten up your day with that pretty smile and bright blue eyes and a heart the size of Alaska!!
My husband is my inspiration. He keeps me grounded and teaches me patience by example. All three of our kids have a close relationship with him and look up to him as a role model. He’s the best anyone could ask for!
Ooops! I forgot to leave my Twitter name.

I am inspired by so many people, namely Michael J Fox for his courage to educate the public on Parkinson’s Disease and to fight for a cure. David Byrne of the Talking Heads is also an inspiration for his bicycle advocacy. It makes me want to enjoy my bike more and more everyday. But no one inspires me more than my mom. She always encourages me to be the best I can be and to live the life that makes me happy. Even if she doesn’t always agree with my decisions or views, she has always shown me nothing but love and encouragement. It makes me want to LIVE! I love my momma!

The person who inspires me to become a great disc golfer is a man named, Alan “bigs” Sweeton. He is a great disc golfer who was able to bobmb discs. He then was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumorand lost his vision from the chemo and the tumor. With out being able to see the basket he still plays, I watched him a few months ago throw 400+ feet through a wall of trees to park the hole and walk away with an easy birdie. He and his fathers dedication to the sport are amazing, and the are truely the best people i have had the pleasure to bring into my life.
thank you keen for making my feet warm and comfy here in maine during disc golf.

People who get out and do cool things inspire me to get out and try them too. Watching videos of kayakers doing a big river or tackling the big ocean waves inspire me to be a better paddler so I can go do the same thing one of these days. Kayak teachers also inspire me as they are the ones responsible for getting people interested in the sport and there being more people out there to paddle with and have fun with. We have some great instructors here in the area and it is great to watch them playing on the river. I want to paddle like them and have fun doing so.
Hands down, my husband is my inspiration. We married more than 20 years ago and have held together through life’s ups and downs. He inspires me to always accept today and to move towards tomorrow with gusto. I’ve achieved a lot of personal goals due to his support and inspiration. Kudos to my mister!
My mom really inspires me! She is 67 and retired, but far from inactive. She volunteers for at least a half dozen organizations and has a full calendar. She works at a wildlife refuge, performs reading plays for elementary school kids, volunteers at a hospital and serves on the board of a local foundation…and that’s just for starters! I want to follow in her footsteps, stay active and make a difference by helping others.

My oldest son. I call him Hero. I was on a onevway path to drugs and alcohol when I became pregnant. It was the kick I needed to become a great mom to this little soul. I have been healthy and sober since. He was diagnosed with diabetes 8 years ago and it hasn’t slowed him down. He accepted his disease with the dignity and grace of a person far beyond his years. I love this boy/man cub!
whoops! my twitter name is whats4dinnermom
Alex Lowe. One of the the greatest climbers of all time, he said “The best climber is the one have the most fun.” l’ll never forget those words. He was amazing.

My wife Devon has inspired me in so many ways – she’s a high energy, fly-by-the-seat-of-her-pants-kind-of-girl that loves to get outdoors, travel and stay active.
In our wedding vows, we promised to challenge each other to live life to the fullest, and that we would be one another’s partner in adventure till death do us part.
Devon pushes me to try new things, stay active and be healthful toward myself and this planet, and I love her for it!

This week I am inspired by Mayor Cory Booker of Newark. I had never heard of Mr Booker until I saw him on Conan. It appears Conan dissed Newark, NJ (everyone does) and the mayor stood up and challenged him on it.
He is amazing. Booker was elected Mayor in 2006, becoming the 36th mayor of Newark.
His story illustrates that not all politicians are politicians.
He walks the walk.
He has lived his life standing up for what he believes and doing what it takes to get the job done.
HE will leave this world a better place.
Wow!
His story (in part) from Wiki:
The son of African-American trailblazers (Cary and Carolyn Booker were among the first African-American executives at IBM), Booker was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in the predominantly white, affluent town of Harrington Park in Bergen County, New Jersey. He is an alumnus of Northern Valley Regional High School at Old Tappan where he was an All-American football player. Following graduation, Booker traveled west to study at Stanford University and earned a B.A. in political science in 1991 as well as an M.A. in sociology the following year. He played varsity football — he made the All–Pacific Ten Academic team — and was elected to the council of (four) presidents. In addition, he ran The Bridge, a student-run crisis hotline and organized help for youth in East Palo Alto from Stanford students. While at Stanford, Booker also became good friends with Rachel Maddow.
After Stanford, Booker won a Rhodes Scholarship and studied at The Queen’s College, Oxford, where he was awarded an honors degree in modern history in 1994. While at Oxford he became friends with Rabbi Shmuley Boteach and became President of the L’Chaim Society, the local chapter of Chabad, and brought together a diverse community there.
Booker obtained a J.D. in 1997 from Yale Law School where he started and operated free legal clinics for low-income residents of New Haven. He was also a Big Brother, and was active in the Black Law Students Association. Booker lived in Newark during his final year at Yale and following graduation served as Staff Attorney for the Urban Justice Center in New York and Program Coordinator of the Newark Youth Project.
From 1998 to 2006, he lived in Brick Towers, a troubled housing complex in Newark’s Central Ward. Booker organized tenants to fight for improved conditions. In November 2006, as one of the last remaining tenants in Brick Towers, Booker left his apartment for the top unit in a three-story rental on Hawthorne Avenue in Newark’s South Ward, an area described as “a drug-and gang-plagued neighborhood of boarded-up houses and empty lots.”[4] Brick Towers has since been demolished and a new mixed-income development will be built there in 2010
In 1998, Booker won an upset victory, beating a four-term incumbent to get elected to the Newark Municipal Council, a council known for its corruption and hard-fought elections.
Once on the Council, Booker proved to be an unconventional public official. In 1999, he went on a 10-day hunger strike, living in a tent in front of one of Newark’s public housing projects (Garden Spires), to protest open-air drug dealing and the associated violence. For five months in 2000 he lived in a contemporary motor home, parking on street corners where drug trafficking frequently occurred.
He proposed a variety of Council initiatives that impacted housing, young people, law and order and the efficiency and transparency of City Hall, but was regularly rebuffed by a resistant Municipal Council and often outvoted 8–1. While on the Council, Booker became an outspoken advocate of education reform.
Booker assumed office as mayor of Newark on July 1, 2006, and is only the third person to govern the city since 1970. After his first week in office, Booker announced a 100-day plan to implement reforms in Newark. Some of the proposed changes included: Adding police officers; ending background checks for many city jobs, an effort to help former offenders find employment in the city; refurbishing police stations; improving city services; and expanding summer youth programs.
On October 16, 2006, Booker formally introduced his administration’s first adopted Newark City Budget. The approved $697.1 million budget resulted in an 8.3% increase in the city’s property tax, which is one of the largest property tax increases in the city’s history. The budget also increased the number of city employees from 3,968 to 4,197. These increases were cited as necessary to fix the structural financial deficit and secure a solid foundation for Newark’s future. Booker pledged to not increase taxes the following year, a promise he kept – the City of Newark has not raised taxes in over two years. His administration has also since reduced the size of government with a 2009 Budget proposal containing 3935 city employees. In addition, the City of Newark has for the last two consecutive years received the GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, reflective of the Booker Administration’s continued commitment to an honest, transparent budgeting process ending decades of neglect and setting a foundation to balance the city’s finances.
One of the mayor’s first priorities was to reduce the city’s crime rate. Booker appointed Garry McCarthy, former Deputy Commissioner of Operations of the New York Police Department, as the director of the Newark Police Department. Public safety in Newark has been overhauled under Director McCarthy’s lead. A new Central Narcotics Division was created as well as a Fugitive Apprehension Unit which has been responsible for the capture of 11 out of 12 Most Wanted Felons in Newark. In addition, major technological advances have been made to crime-fighting initiatives such as citywide camera and gunshot detection systems. Community-oriented and privately funded programs such as the Crime Stoppers and Gun Stoppers anonymous tip lines have made a important impact in crime prevention and apprehension of criminals in Newark. Crime reduction has been such a central concern to the Booker Administration that Booker, along with his security team, was known to personally patrol the streets of Newark until times as late as 4 a.m. early in his first term.
Crime has dropped significantly in the City of Newark, which currently leads the nation in violent crime reduction. From 2006-2008, crime dropped by the following percentages: murders 36%, shooting incidents 41%, rapes 30%, and auto thefts 26%. In 2008, Newark had its lowest murder rate since 1959. Despite the success indicated by these statistics, as the global economic recession set in, robberies rose 27% in 2008 and another 10% through late June 2009. As of July 26, 2009, murders are down 42% overall, rapes are down 41% overall and robberies are down 12% since 2008.
In addition to lowering crime, Booker has both doubled the amount of affordable housing under development, and quadrupled the amount under predevelopment. Booker has slashed the city budget deficit from $180 million to $73 million.
Despite criticisms, Booker has also raised the salaries of many city workers. Most recently, however, the Booker Administration and the City of Newark imposed one-day-a-month furloughs for all non-uniformed employees from July through December 2010, as well as two-percent pay cuts for managers and directors currently earning more than $100,000 a year. Citing the reason for the pay cuts, Booker noted, “In 2006, we took over a city in financial crisis. We have made significant steps to address our financial future and decided that we would not balance the budget on the backs of our residents.” Booker has reduced his own salary twice since taking office, voluntarily reducing his salary by 8% early in his first year as mayor. None of Booker’s senior managers have received pay increases since taking office.
Mayor Booker’s leadership has attracted approximately $100 million in private philanthropy to the City of Newark and a variety of nonprofits and public/private partnerships have been created and used to better the lives of Newark residents. In April of 2008, the Newark Charter School Fund was established to provide grants in support of Newark’s charter schools to support a successful public school system in Newark. The City of Newark also works with GreenSpaces, which has committed $40 million toward the largest park expansion initiative in over a century with a total of twenty one park construction and rehabilitation projects scheduled for completion in every ward by the end of 2010. To support the Newark Police Department, the Newark Police Foundation was established in 2006 and provides funding and other services to the Police Department which has had a significant impact on the NPD’s ability to pay for necessary resources that would otherwise not be readily funded through the department’s budget.
In 2009, after President Barack Obama became president of the United States, Booker was offered the chance to head the new White House Office of Urban Affairs Policy; Booker turned the offer down citing a commitment to Newark.
In an effort to make government more accessible, Booker’s administration has held regular open office hours during which city residents can meet personally with the Mayor to discuss their concerns.
Booker was honored in October 2009 by the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence with the Sarah Brady Visionary Award for his work in reducing gun violence.
Booker is a member of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition,[36] a bi-partisan group with a stated goal of “making the public safer by getting illegal guns off the streets.” The Coalition is co-chaired by Boston mayor Thomas Menino and New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg.
I give a shout out to my mom RAINIE. She just passed away in May but is the most inspirational person in my life to date ! Miss you mom!

TxTvlPro here again.
Well shoot… I didn’t remember that the person who inspires me will also get the wardrobe. I am sure Mayor Cory would appreciate the duds, he’s a cool and hip dude.
In the event it needs to be someone I actually KNOW… I am very much inspired by my stepson Chris. He has served 7 years total in Iraq and Afghanistan – all voluntarily. He’s a GI Joe. A trong no-nonsense soldier that snow boards and rides fast motorcycles when he not out saving the world.
He is currently at Ft Huachuca in AZ.
My mom inspires me. She moved from Hong Kong over 40 years ago and supported a large family by working nearly every day without complaint. I lead a relatively cushy life – went to college, work in a nice office, and get weekends and holidays off. She worked at restaurants, factories and is currently a grocery clerk, and I remember her looking for work even on her day offs. Some might view her as a workaholic, but that is not the case. She worked out of necessity to support and to ensure that her children have a better, more comfortable future.
Wow… I obviously need to pay attention to what I type.
