Comments about KEEN Men's Mt Vernon 6" (Soft Toe):

I am a fluid power specialist. I am everywhere from the bilge of a ship specifying valves to steel mills changing out hydraulic lines. Never at any point in the past year have I thought my boots weren't up to the days work. I have found them to be comfortable and durable. I know that I have personally changed 4 other personnel over to the Keen product line since the first of the year. These boots don't seem to have the typical issues with this style sole. What I was worried about was the sole coming away from the upper in high stressed areas like right behind the toe. For those of you that constantly wear out the toe, these may be your shoes. Good Hunting Gentlemen.

I doubt that I would buy this boot again.

Comments about KEEN Men's Mt Vernon 6" (Soft Toe):

This boot was a good boot starting out. In fact, it still has its waterproof qualities intact. However, after about 8 months or so, both boots cracked deeply from side to side. It cracked all the way to the liner or insole.

Comments about KEEN Men's Mt Vernon 6" (Soft Toe):

I have been using a pair of the Mt. Vernon boots as my primary day hiking boot all summer. I have logged many 5 to 6 hour weekend hikes and 2-3 hour hikes a couple evenings a week. Included was an overnight on the AT. Well over 200 miles on mixed, rocky terrain with an old ALICE pack toting some 25#.

Overall I enjoy these boots, they are comfortable and have a generous toe box. I too have noted the hard entry/exit of laces in the speed lacing eyes. While these can be a pain to unlace the gripping of the laces really helps keep the lace tension set. Where as with other style lacings it is not uncommon to adjust laces after walking some hours. In the Mt. Vernon I can walk 6 hours without touching a lace.

One of the other reviews mentioned sole problems. While I have not seen failure of the sole I have noted an increase in flex and loss of stiffness especially on 80-90 degree days. The entire boot tends to bend at the toe end of the lacings and approximately in line with the shoe wide groove in the outer sole. With insoles removed one can feel the crease in the soles when flexing the boot.

This is somewhat disappointing as tread and leathers are all in great shape. To help combat this tendency I've installed turf toe spring steel insoles. While these certainly restore stiffness, it remains to be seen how well my feet take to them.

It is probably unfair to rate a work boot to hiking standards so I'll decline the bottom line recommendation below and let any reader make their own determination.

    Decent Boot

    By

Comments about KEEN Men's Mt Vernon 6" (Soft Toe):

I have a hard time finding boots that last. These have held up the best out of any boot that I've tried, but I am a little disappointed that they're shot after a year of use. I expected a little better quality for the price. The leather has torn and the sole on one boot has cracked and separated.
