Spreading Joy of Bicycles Around the World – KEEN Launching New Toolkit Program with Hybrid.Care Partner 88bikes

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

KEEN is embarking upon a new phase of its partnership with the 88bikes Foundation.  We’ll be working with the nonprofit to help launch and support the organization’s new 88bikes Toolkit program. The program kicked off at the Interbike International Trade Show Expo, which is being held in Las Vegas from September 22 through 24.

88bikes embodies our company motto of HybridLife “Create Play Care- It’s a Way of Life.” Around the world, 88bikes is reaching out to kids who have had incredibly challenging lives, creating new ways for them to live and play. KEEN is thrilled to support this life-changing kind of caring.

What is the 88bikes Toolkit Program?

The new 88bikes Toolkit program is for those who want to help spread the joy of bicycles with the 88bikes Foundation at a lower donation amount.

A $40 donation will fund one bike maintenance kit, which includes tubes, tires and tools. It will also pay for a local bike mechanic who will work with an 88bikes volunteer to fix bikes that need repair and to train the kids to work on their own bikes. In return, donors will receive a photograph of the group of kids at the organization that receives the kit.  The program will also give 88bikes a base for building ongoing relationships with the international organizations that receive the bikes, and will add to the strength of the 88bikes volunteer program.

To launch 88bikes Toolkit, KEEN is providing matching funds for donations made at Interbike. Every $20 donated will be matched 100 percent by KEEN. Starting this fall, people can also donate to 88bikes Toolkit through the 88bikes website, and KEEN will extend their matching program through the end of 2010.

About 88bikes Foundation

The mission of 88Bikes Foundation is to provide bikes – a sustainable, joyful, empowering form of transportation – to young people in developing countries who have been affected by war, conflict, poverty, disease, or other regional hardships. To do so, they rely on individual donations of $88, which is the approximate cost of a bike in most developing countries.

Commuting to Work – 88 Bikes Raffle Winner Enjoys Her New Bike

Dear KEEN,

Wow – thank you so much.

Wendy Kerr - 88 Bike Donation Winner

I was super inspired by the 88 Bikes presentation at the KEEN booth during the Interbike Tradeshow. I hardly ever donate to anything (a part from IMBA, of course) but this program, being such a tangible and life-changing gift for so many kids around the world, was just too compelling. And KEEN’s match made it so affordable that I couldn’t afford NOT to donate. I never thought I would win the bike, but it was fun checking it out and fantasizing. And now – boom! I’m gonna have a sweet new bike to take to work on every day. I ride to work every day on my road bike, which is nice and fast, but a death trap in rainy, icy or snowy conditions. Needless to say, I’m super excited – you have not only made my day, but my entire winter!

For me, bikes represent freedom of mobility, much like the car is for many people and that is exactly what 88 Bikes is giving to these kids across the world – freedom.

Thank you!!!
