Earth Day’s 40th Anniversary – KEEN Ambassador Speaks to 100,000 People

Friday, April 30th, 2010

On Sunday, April 25th, KEEN attended Earth Day’s 40th anniversary celebration in Washington, DC.
KEEN Ambassador Alison Gannett had the opportunity to speak to more than 100,000 people during the event.

“KEEN rocks for helping me SAVE OUR SNOW and our planet,” says Alison Gannett.  ”Together we rode 350 miles to Washington, DC to lobby our Senators and speak at The Climate Rally to over 100,000 people with the likes of Sting, Bob Weir and James Cameron and the Avatar cast. My Presidio’s rocked the trail and the Whitehouse!”

Here’s a video highlighting the event. . .

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

KEEN is organizing a trail restoration project in partnership with Zappos.com, Friends of Nevada Wilderness and US Forest Service’s Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. More than 150 employees from Zappos’ office will volunteer on Wednesday, April 28th as part of a team-building event. This past week a handful of people visited the site to better understand what’s in store for the volunteers.

From April 19 – April 25, KEEN sold a total of 360 items that qualified a KEEN time pledge to Waterkeeper Alliance volunteer hours.

That means KEEN employees will donate 7.5 days of time to working for clean water.

About the KEEN Earth Day Challenge

For each pair of Coronado shoes purchased between April 18 – 25, 2009 via our online shop (www.keenfootwear.com) and for each Harvest Marshall wallet purchased ($10) at any of the Earth Day events listed below, we pledged 10 minutes of employee time to help conserve our planet’s water resources with Waterkeeper’s Alliance.

Stay tuned for more updates.

Earth Day trail work in Pittsburgh with Dick’s Sporting Goods

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

WHERE

The event took place on Heritage Trail on Pittsburgh’s Southside between 4th and 10th streets.

The Heritage Trail is part of the The Great Allegheny Passage, which is a trail system that connects Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C.

ABOUT THE EVENT

For the third consecutive year, KEEN partnered with Dick’s Sporting Goods, Friends of the Riverfront and Tree Vitalize on the project. During the course of the day on Saturday, April 18th, volunteers planted 117 indigenous large trees, black-eyed susans and sunflowers, as well as thousands of flower bulbs. The goal of the planting was to create a native tree canopy along side the trail.

In addition to the plantings we also installed 4 benches, 1 Bike Pittsburgh bike rack and a new crushed limestone trial leading to a scenic viewpoint.

All in all we had nearly 350 volunteers mostly comprised of Dick’s Sporting Goods employees and their friends and family. In exchange for a $35 donation the volunteers received a pair of KEEN, a logo’d water bottle from CamelBak, an event T-shirt and KEEN Socks. The funds raised this year will be used in part to fund the expenses for next year’s project.

Teens Turning Green

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Tomorrow is Earth Day and I wanted to give a little love to some young teens in Dallas, Texas who are are not only passionate about being green, but are also advocates for sustainable products. They hosted an environmental fair to raise awareness amongst high school students about alternative options that are not only better for the environment but fashionable as well.

On Friday, April 17th, the Keen on Green Environmental Fair sponsored by Whole Foods Market was hosted at Hockaday School in Dallas, Texas from 4:00-7:00 p.m. There was a fashion show with casual clothing from Barney’s and vintage prom dresses modeled by students. There was also a Green Spa with organic and non-toxic skin care and make-up lines, a Green Car show, a speaker from both the national organization Teens Turning Green and the Dallas based Current Energy store.

To help promote the fair and increase awareness about the opportunities for “green” footwear, students of the environmental club made a video.

Friday, April 17th, 2009

With Earth Day now less than a week away, I just wanted to share my thoughts on a great company that sells some awesome organic beauty products.  They are called Juice Beauty and were formed by a team of women who are passionate about organic and healthy lifestyles.  All of their products contain up to 95% certified organic ingredients, which is not only good for the Earth but also for your body as well.  This past November, KEEN joined up with Juice Beauty and came up with a cool eco-chic beauty bag.   You can still find it on the web for those who are interested.  If you want to learn more about the company or the organic products they offer vistit the Juice Beauty website.

iPhorest Application

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

With Earth Day rapidly approaching (April 22nd for those who have forgotten), I wanted to share my thoughts on a cool new iphone application called iPhorest that is not only fun but a good way to do your part in making the world a little greener…literally.

The application is simple. Once you have purchased and uploaded the application to your iPhone, you can plant a virtual tree and The Conservation Fund will plant a real one—starting with the restoration of vulnerable wildlife habitats along the Gulf Coast in the United States.  To plant a tree, you just follow these 5 simple steps:

1. Dig a hole by creating a digging motion with your phone.

2. Tap your phone to plant a seed.

3. Shake your phone to create a rainstorm.

4. Wait for the sun to come out and your tree will grow.

5. Repeat the rainstorm to make your tree grow until it reaches its full potential.

You can repeat this as many times as you want to get a full, lush forest.  You can also share your tree growth at any stage with friends and see other iPhorest users within the world.

Pretty cool, huh?  It’s an easy way to do your part on Earth Day without even having to get your hands dirty!
