KEEN Garage and Schoolhouse Supplies

On September 9th, a group of 11 people from KEEN went to Woodlawn Elementary School in Portland, Oregon to deliver more than 500 backpacks filled with school supplies to the entire school. The KEEN Garage had an in-store campaign where they pledged to donate a filled backpack for every pair of shoes sold to Schoolhouse Supplies. The kids, ranging in ages from kindergarten to 8th grade were so excited for and appreciative of their new packs. Each KEEN Skyline and Eaton backpack contained loose leaf paper, crayons or markers, erasers, glue sticks and pencils. What a great way to start the school year!

Partnering with Learning AFAR Students for Trip to Cambodia

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

Learning AFAR is bringing travel opportunities to low income students in New York City, Chicago, Houston and the San Francisco Bay Area with scholarship support from the AFAR Foundation and the Pearson Foundation. KEEN provided more than 85 pairs of hiking boots to student who will participate in the summer 2011 program.  Here’s a brief  update from the Learning AFAR group in Cambodia.

“Check out the first pics from the Cambodia trip!! The students just left the Sambor District, where they stayed with local families and participated in activities at the local schools. They’re now in Siem Reap for their last few days in Cambodia, where they’ll learn about conservation efforts in that area, visit a primary school, spend a day learning how to prepare and serve Cambodian cuisine from a hospitality school that enables disadvantaged Cambodian youth to achieve economic independence using these skills, and then visit the temples of Angkor Wat,” posted Learning AFAR Foundation on their Facebook page (First Batch of Cambodia Photos).

Zimbabwe

For the past 13 years Dr. Paul Thistle, a graduate of the University of Toronto Obstetrics and Gynecology Program and Adjunct Professor in the Department, has been Medical Director of the Salvation Army Howard Hospital in Glendale, Zimbabwe. This 140-bed hospital, located in a rural area about 1 hour’s drive northwest of the Zimbabwean capital of Harare, is the primary referral centre for the surrounding rural population of approximately 250,000. Zimbabwe is a country of approximately 17 million located in Southern Africa. Zimbabwe unfortunately suffers a high burden of HIV disease, with approximately 20% of the adult population living with HIV.

Howard Hospital has a busy obstetrical service, performing approximately 2,100 deliveries/year in addition to general adult and pediatric services. There is further a strong program for counseling, testing and treatment of HIV, in particular for the pregnant population as well as for the general population.

There is considerable research ongoing at Howard Hospital, in particular in the prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV as well as in other areas of maternal/child health care and tropical medicine. Dr. Thistle partners in research with University of Toronto faculty from the departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Infectious Diseases, Microbiology and Family and Community Medicine as well as local faculty from the University of Harare in Zimbabwe.

Many students and residents have had the opportunity to participate in wonderful clinical and research electives at Howard Hospital over the years. A list of expected skills at the completion of a resident elective are provided. Please contact Dr. Thistle directly at for more information about an experience at Howard Hospital.
