A Letter from Sheila: KEEN Commuter Sandals and the HooDoo 500 Ultradistance Bike Race

Sunday, December 5th, 2010

Dear KEEN:

I have an update regarding the use of the KEEN Commuter sandals on the HooDoo 500 Ultradistance Bike Race by my husband, Russ Stevens. He returned to the event in 2010, as a Voyager (no support crew or vehicle), and finished the event in just over 40 hours. He did buy a new pair just before the race, as his originals were a getting a bit tattered.  Here is a LINK to his ride story.

It was an incredibly tough field out there. Russ broke the current Voyager course record by 2.5 hours, but still only came in third! He definitely fielded lots of questions about his footwear!

Best regards,

Sheila

(also a KEEN fan, but only up to 250 miles at a time so far!)

L.A.T.E. Ride Encourages 10,000 Cyclists to Ride after Midnight in Chicago

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

The L.A.T.E. Ride was started 22 years ago to support Friends of the Parks, a Chicago non-profit dedicated to supporting the Chicago Park District in their efforts to establish and maintain their extensive park network for everyone to enjoy. Over the years Friends of the Park has helped to establish new parks and playgrounds, support upkeep and maintenance of existing parks, provide for new equipment and help with establishing new programs for children through the park facilities. Friends has also fostered strong environmental initiatives, and programs to help understand the importance of the natural setting to the city for recreation, playgrounds and leisure use.

“KEEN sponsors the event because it fits with all of the initiatives that KEEN believes in, including: involvement with the environment and opportunities to incorporate play into everyone’s lives, use of environmentally friendly transportation, and giving back to the community,” commented Lynn Rowe of Buy Design Sales.  Lynn is an independent sales representative for KEEN.

Wife Writes About Her Husband’s Love Affair with the Commuter Sandal

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Dear KEEN,

I was not sure how to bring my husband’s use of the Commuter sandals to the attention of the KEEN. Basically, Russ is a long distance, endurance cyclist who is constantly surrounded by other cyclists who are trying to get a competitive edge whether it is through equipment, nutrition and/or training. We can’t tell you how many people are astounded that his current shoe of choice is the KEEN cycling sandals.

My husband has been struggling with cycling shoes for long distance events (>150 miles) for the past few years. He has tried $300 shoes and $40 shoes (much in-between), various cleat styles, cleat positions and a multitude of additional padding, orthotics, etc. Nonetheless, he has never been able to keep foot pain at bay while doing demanding long distance events. We regularly do organized double centuries (>200 miles in 1 day) and touring, but his competitive side always went back to using “real shoes” for his major timed events. Just this past weekend, while in a local Sports Basement store (in full cycling attire), the shop worker asked how he liked his KEENs. After hearing how much Russ loved them, the worker replied, “Yeah, a lot of people try them on, but we just don’t sell many of them. People don’t think they will work for real cycling. “

KEEN Fan on the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii

On top of the 14,000 ft peak of Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Two weeks ago, he completed a 600k in his KEENs. It was then he decided he would ditch the shoes and use sandals all the way for the upcoming HooDoo 500 from Sept. 12-13th. The Hoodoo 500 is a non-stop 519 mile bicycle race with 30,000 feet of climbing.

I submitted the attached photo of my husband as a part of the WEND magazine photo Friday promotion that focuses on “cycling”. He used his camera phone to take this photograph after he cycled to the top of the 14000 ft peak of Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii last summer. He began in the sunshine in Hilo (sea level) but eventually needed gloves and a coat (but he neglected to add socks). That’s ok, it shows off the sandals better. Not exactly a perfectly framed, high resolution masterpiece, but who else has used their Keen sandals to cycle to that same spot? Who knows? Maybe he was the first!

Sincerely,

Sheila

WEND Friday Photo: Voluntary Chinese Car Dealership

Pictures of humorous translations often make their way into our travel photo albums, and today’s Friday Photo would certainly be a perfect fit. Diane Desenberg snapped this shot of the Yung Long Voluntary Car Dealership while traveling in China. “Apparently the only “cars” for sale are bicycles. Even children can shop at the Yun Long Voluntarily Car Dealership, because there is a selection of kid’s bikes as well,” says Diane. Those kids might not know the correct English word for “bike,” but at least they’ll start cycling at an early age!  For her great shot, Diane scores a pair of Keen cycling shoes.

We couldn’t have picked a better theme for the August Friday Photo contest, because looking at pictures of bikes never gets old! This picture, shot by Ryan Whisner in Namibia, captures the essence of traveling with your bike: it’s never easy. It’s clear from this photo that when it comes to cycling, as Ryan puts it, “sand = bad.”

For his great shot, Ryan scores a pair of KEEN cycling shoes.
