KEEN Interns Lend A Hand to Help Make Homeownership a Reality

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

The KEEN-Terns (a.k.a. KEEN interns) were out in full force on July 19th to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East. The KEEN-Terns and Habitat staff lent a hand to help make homeownership a reality for families in need. The volunteers spent much of the day installing siding on the house and installing scaffolding.

It feels great to get out with KEEN and lend a hand. The materials we are using are of high quality and we are told the building should last at least 150 years. It has also been outfitted with utilities and materials that can keep the house running on $1.50 a day. It makes me feel good knowing we are helping out and being green at the same time. - Colton Rice, KEEN Marketing Intern

Corporate Recess? Playworks Takes Fifteen KEEN Employees to Local School For Some Recess

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

We all need some playtime.

After working all day or all week, we all want to decompress with some recess. For me, yoga, bouldering, and hiking with my snowboard through knee-deep fluff give me the mental relaxation I need to clear my work-fogged brain. For kids in schools, a game of kickball or tag can make an enormous difference in their learning day.

This is the central premise of Playworks’ mission. Playworks is a national non-profit that strives to promote inclusive and active recess that kids need in order to return to the classroom clear headed and ready to learn. It is unfortunate but true that school recess can be the lair of bullies, exclusive games, cliques, or general unsupervised mayhem. Many understaffed or underfunded schools have gone as far as cutting recess down or out entirely due to problems on recess grounds. Playworks sees all of this as an issue that needs correcting, and feels that kids need their recess.

KEEN Credit Department Volunteers at Oregon Zoo for MLK Weekend Of Service

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

The fifth annual United Way Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend of Service was a huge success and drew 2,874 volunteers to more than 100 projects across the Portland/Vancouver metro area. Our credit department had the opportunity to volunteer at the Oregon Zoo as part of the MLK Weekend of Service.

Despite the cold weather, everyone worked really hard and efficiently, and we accomplished quite a bit. The zoo horticultural staff was so appreciative, and said we got much more done than they anticipated.

And, the credit team all enjoyed a special surprise treat — a behind the scenes tour of the giraffe house! The keeper was so informative and it was great to be able to feed carrot treats to our new, sweet (and tall!) friend.

A special thanks goes out to Hands on Greater Portland and the United Way of Columbia-Willamette for organizing the weekend of service!
