Recess + Wellness

Follow the wise words of the New York Times: Get up. Get out. Don’t sit. This week their blog Well published a timely article addressing the dangers of our increasingly sedentary lifestyle. While the findings are not new, the most recent statistics from the reports poignantly describe the epidemic:

Every single hour of television watched after the age of 25 reduces the viewer’s life expectancy by 21.8 minutes.

An adult who spends an average of six hours a day watching TV over the course of a lifetime can expect to live 4.8 years fewer than a person who does not watch TV.

We might convince ourselves that we are not at risk of disease because we manage the recommended 30 minutes of exercise a day, but we are still at risk if we sit all day.

When muscles don’t contact, they require less fuel, and the surplus, in the form of blood sugar, accumulates in the bloodstream, contributing to diabetes risk and other health concerns.

The stats are alarming, to say the least. But there are numerous (easy) ways to prevent these future health problems. Even if you exercise regularly, sitting in front of your computer all day can still be detrimental to your health. Set a timer for yourself at work to make sure you get up at least once every hour. Try these other ideas:

-Put the garbage bin on the other side of the office.

-Stand during coffee breaks and telephone calls.

-Organize standing meetings.

-Create a standing desk. Be creative.

-If you take public transportation, stand on the bus or subway.

-Ask a coworker to go on a quick walk with you around the block.

-Park in the first spot that you see, even if it’s not the closest one.

Fall is Here

Thursday, October 4th, 2012

Fall is here! Even though we’ve been enjoying unusually sunny weather at the KEEN HQ in Portland, change is upon us. Already, the leaves are falling and the air is getting crispier. Where will you be exploring this fall? Here’s a few ideas from some excellent bloggers to get you started.

Take a Harvest Moon Ride – Path Less Pedaled

The trail in full daylight doesn’t seem as long or as mysterious; it is an altogether different place when the sun is out. The magic of riding under the full moon is gone, but not forgotten. We are a little sad that we won’t be able to camp at Dodge Park for another year, but excited at the possibilities of other places night rides could take us.

The Family Sponge is also encouraging parents to bike to school with their kids. Check out their latest post: 5 Reasons to Bike to School. Do you regularly bike or walk to school with your children? Are there any challenges that make it difficult for you? What would you do to encourage more families to participate?

The Bicycle Transportation Alliance is a non-profit membership organization working to promote bicycling and improve bicycling conditions in Oregon and SW Washington. Since 1990, the BTA has worked in partnership with citizens, businesses, community groups, government agencies and elected officials to create healthy, sustainable communities where bicycling is safe, convenient and accessible.

Worldwide Recess Day: Let’s break the record!

Wednesday, September 12th, 2012

Have you heard? This Friday is Worldwide Recess Day! Time to jump out of your chair and take (at least) 10 minutes to play. We want you to participate and help us set the world record for the most recesses taken in one day! Looking for a little inspiration?

Biggest Game of Dodgeball

4,979 people.  Thousands of spongy red balls. Absolute chaos. At the University of Alberta in Canada, almost 5000 people set the record for the largest game of dodgeball. Check out the video here.

Best Lifesize Piano

We absolutely love this idea. Fun Theory created a charming piano stairs at a metro station in Stockholm, Sweden and asked,  “Can we get more people to take the stairs over the escalator by making it fun to do?” Yes!

Recess Around the World

Friday, September 7th, 2012

Worldwide Recess Day is one week away! To motivate you to #TAKE10 we’re sharing recess games from around the globe.

ESCARGOT (FRANCE)
2 or more players. You’ll just need chalk!

A spin off the standard hopscotch, escargot is a French playground game. Draw an escargot (snail) in the shape of a spiral with squares numbered 1-21. Hop on one foot on each numbered square. When you reach the center, turn around and go back! Once you’ve made it back, choose a square and write your initials in it. The next players will have to skip over your square each time they pass. Each time you go back and forth through the spiral, add your initials to a new square. Be careful not to step on any lines or use both feet to hop! When no one can reach the center or when all the squares are marked, the game is over. The player with the most squares in the winner. Bonne chance!

BULLDOGS (BRITAIN)
5 or more players. Find a field or any open space!

Originally from Britain and similar to the American Red Rover, British Bulldogs, (also known as Octopus, Bullrush, Pom-Pom Pullaway and Running Bases), gets your heart racing and can get competitive fast. Choose one or two players to be the “bulldog”. The dogs stand in the center of the field, while the rest of the players stand in line on one end. The goal of the game is to cross the field without getting tagged by the bulldogs. If you’re tagged, you become a bulldog. The winner is the last remaining player to cross without getting tagged. Have fun!
