“Blissfully Lost in the Woods”

Wednesday, August 1st, 2012

Perhaps wilderness is an antidote to our postindustrial self-absorption. It’s a place to be deflated, humbled and awed all at once. It’s a window into a world larger than ourselves, one that doesn’t respond to a remote. It’s an Olympiad for all of us.

This past weekend Nicholas D. Kristof of the NY Times recounted his 200 mile backpacking trip along the Pacific Crest Trail with his fourteen year old daughter. Despite five-foot snow drifts and hundreds of mosquito bites, Kristof and his daughter walked away from the experience feeling exhausted and exhilarated. He made reference to Cheryl Strayed’s novel  Wild (read our review), citing the forest’s ability to provide comfort and solice for Strayed when she needed it most. Last week, blogger Backpacking Matt shared a similar experience:

I enjoy the quiet solitude that comes from walking through the bush, climbing up mountains or pedaling my bike. It’s times like this that allow me to decompress, relax and reflect on life.

Kristof, Strayed, and Matt’s messages are not new to us, but their gentle reminders are important: connecting with nature is an essential human need.  As Kristof says, “In short, the wilderness humbled us, and that’s why it’s indispensable.”

KEEN Ambassador on the Playground – Michiel and Soraya to Ride the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

Michiel from the Netherlands and his girlfriend Soraya from France started their adventure biking the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route in North American. It’s the longest unpaved mountain bike trail in the world covering 2,745 miles between the Mexico-USA border all the way through the ups and downs of the Rockies to Banff National Park in British Columbia, Canada.

This Holy Grail for mountain bikers ends in Banff, where they take a left, passing through the wine area in British Columbia. From Banff to Vancouver, they try to follow a part of the Trans Canada Trail. Depending on wind and mood directions in the first three months of cycling, they take a break on Vancouver Island and surroundings: explore the city of Vancouver, cover a big part of Vancouver Island itself, read few books, take some surf lessons, etc.

We wish them good luck on their trip and most of all, lots of Playtime!

Follow their adventure on their website.

Taking On the Styrkeprøven Challange – A Bike Race of 540km in 30 Hours Across Norway

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Nol, Frans and Klaus from KEEN Europe took up the challenge to race through Norway on a grueling 540km and 350km race in 30hours.  This race is called the Styrkeprøven and is one of the hardest races in Europe.

Nol is heading out for a training ride from the KEEN Europe office in Rotterdam.
Nol - Training for the Styrkeproven

The idea for the Styrkeprøven came from Gjems Eric Onstad and other key people in bike sport in the mid 60′s. As a resistance fighter during World War II (1940-45) Gjems Eric Onstad was responsibile for activities in Trøndelag.  He monitor the retreat of German troops from Finland through northern Sweden on the bike.

The fastest racer reaching the finish line came from the biker of Velo Club Zoncolan. They finished the Styrkeprøven in 12:51h, which equals an average speed of 42km/h.

Nol just biked from Rotterdam to Amsterdam in 3 hours (75km). Lets see if these guys can keep up with them!

Mountain Biking Japanese Winter in the Gunma Region of Japan

Monday, December 20th, 2010

“Mid-November, I went mountain biking in Gunma to shoot an articles for Bicycle Magazine. At this altitude (1500 ~ 1800m), the view spreads pretty far across the Japanese landscape. For this trip, I wore the KEEN Targhee IIs, which gripped well in the early morning snow. In the photograph, the shoes are rather wet, but downright dry.” – BIKE’N SHOES
