Summit For Someone: Mt. Whitney

Monday, June 25th, 2012

KEEN Ambassador Forest Woodward and the Summit for Someone team recently topped out on Mt. Whitney via the mountaineer’s route. As a result of the climb, 30K was raised for Big City Mountaineers to help get at risk youth out on their own wilderness adventures.

Here’s some info from Forest on how he got started with Summit for Someone:

“With brothers and sisters named Autumn, Rivers, and Canyon it doesn’t take a great stretch of imagination to realize that I come from a family who values nature and the experiences that come from being in the out of doors. Growing up our parents homeschooled us in large part so that we were free to travel, experience, and ultimately learn through outdoor pursuits all over the world.

Looking back (and inward and forward) I have a deep gratitude for the lessons I learned, and continue to learn, through my frequent forays into nature. It is on high mountain ridges and on swift rushing rivers that I have found the scope of my imagination broadened, my appreciation for this world fullest, and understanding of self deepest.

That is why I was drawn to Summit for Someone, and signed up to climb Mt. Whitney in April of 2012, in order to raise awareness (through my photographs) and funds so that under privileged and at risk youth might have the opportunity to learn and grow in the out of doors.”

Climbing Mount Rainier for Big City Mountaineers – A Story from a Woman Who Rock Climbs and Plays Outside

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

“Climbing with a team of women from around the country to raise funds for Big City Mountaineers, something about the trip felt a bit like cheating. I expected it to be the hardest thing I had ever done, and to be fair, it was not a walk in the park. But, surrounded by incredible women, climbing for a cause we all believed in, it felt a bit like our climb was blessed. We had good weather, great training, a summit window, and a safe and successful climb,” comments Sara Lingafelter about her experience.  You can read the entire story here.

Hi my name is Hajia and I am from Kenya, I was originally born in Somalia. My parents left Somalia in 1992 when the war broke out, the same war that is still going on now. My family is Somali Bantu and we were thought of as the lower class so my parents left the country for a better life for their kids. After many stops we settled in a Kenyan Refugee Camp. Life in the camp was fascinating because I met new people who were different, spoke different languages and it was amazing how even though we were all different we got along . . . click here to continue reading.

KEEN Field Service Rep to Volunteer for Hybrid.Care Partner Big City Mountaineers

Friday, July 10th, 2009

hhinne-060I am thrilled to say that I will be able to volunteer as an adult mentor on one of Big City Mountaineers (BCM) summer trips in the Boundary Waters!

BCM’s mission is to enhance the lives of under-resourced urban teens through transformative outdoor experiences.  The summer trips are designed to match five adult mentors with five teens for a week-long single-gender backpacking or canoeing trip. KEEN has partnered with BCM over the years, providing Newport sandals for all teen participants.

This August I will have the opportunity to attend a canoeing trip with five girls from the Enlace Chicago, a non-profit organization in the Little Village Community of Chicago. Not only am I excited to portage through the Boundary Waters in my Newports, but I am looking forward to a most certainly challenging week spent getting to know some of BCM’s leaders as well as the Enlace girls!

More to come……..

Friends,

Big City Mountaineers has been an important part of my life for close to twenty years and I have been fortunate to help lead the organization for the past seven of those years.

I have seen the impact both empirically and, more importantly, in the remarkable teens who I have been honored to know personally.

I try to back up my beliefs with actions. As my friend, so do you. I am asking for you to take action on behalf of the youth served by BCM. Please donate to support my campaign to Change a Life!

The Change a Life Campaign is running through September 15, 2009. KEEN, Big Agnes and Northern Mountain Supply have teamed up to make it worth your while.

With thanks,

Mark
