Wood Carvings Tell KEEN’s Story in Salt Lake City

At KEEN, we believe in building strong communities, and that’s why at last summer’s KEENfest in Salt Lake City, we donated a $5,000 grant to help support the Cannon Greens Community Garden. With that money, Cannon Greens put up a wooden fence around their garden for extra security, supplied perennial plants to go around the garden’s perimeter, and added a “You-Pick-It Bed” from which the public is able to pick.

We’re heading back to Salt Lake City again this week for the Outdoor Retailer convention, and this time we’re bringing along two wood carvings to add to the beauty of the gardens. These carvings, which are made from reclaimed wood and carved by Pacific Northwest chainsaw carvers, will be donated to the Cannon Greens Community Garden to inspire future gardeners and provide reminders about the abundant outdoor opportunities available to those who live in the state of Utah.

In addition to the two wood carvings that we’ll be leaving behind, our carvers — Robert Tidwell and Matt Hambrook — will be carving two additional pieces live in Salt Lake City outside of the Salt Palace Convention Center. And don’t worry if you won’t be in attendance at Outdoor Retailer; we’ll be sharing blog updates each day of the show to document the progress of the carvings.

These two carvings will be dedicated to telling the history of KEEN and the things that inspire us. Our roots are firmly planted in the outdoors and, like the title of our blog reads, we believe that the outdoors is anyplace without a ceiling. We want to share with you the places where we play and, likewise, to hear about your most memorable outdoor moments.

To kick this off, we’ll be sharing a series of blog posts this week from KEEN employees to highlight examples of how they followed their feet and eventually fell in love with the outdoors. We’ll then come calling for your stories.

To make sure we’re covering all of our favorite places in these stories, we’ll break them up into the following categories:

  • Mountains
  • Trails
  • Water
  • City Streets

Start thinking about what your story will be. At the end of this week, we just might come asking for it.
