When we decided to rethink our approach to sustainability, we realized there were small opportunities all around us. Literally. We looked at our factory floors, at the aluminum molds, rubber trimming, even soda cans, and we saw more than scraps – tear them up, melt them down, and put them to use as something new.

And it's just the beginning, one of the small steps we can take toward a world where we think first. We call it Hybrid.Think.

This season, we're rolling out Hybrid.Think in a number of ways. It's in our new packaging, the 100% Hybrid Box. It uses biodegradable materials, natural water-based latex glue, soy-based inks, and weighs 25% less than the old box, reducing labor, power and fuel in shipping. Best of all, it easily collapses for recycling.

Our new bag line, Hybrid.Transport, features recycled aluminum and rubber reclaimed from our shoe factory floors.

And Hybrid.Think really takes off with Hybrid.Pedal in August 2007. To highlight the importance of environmental issues and the work of the Conservation Alliance, KEEN employees and friends in the outdoor industry are cycling from Portland, OR to Salt Lake City, UT for the August O.R. show.

Sometimes, all you need to do is rethink your options and all sorts of new possibilities appear.

Hybrid.Think
It's a hybrid approach for a HybridLife.

First Accountability Report in Fall 2008

The first KEEN Accountability Report is planned for release in the fall of 2008. This report will provide information and metrics on the challenges, successes and disappointments the company must manage during its journey toward social and environmental best practices.

The report will be based on the reporting principles of the Global Reporting Initiative, an international network of business, civil society, labor, and professional institutions developing a Sustainability Reporting Framework to report on economic, environmental, and social performance.
